Chicago Guardian Ad Litem (GAL) and Child’s Representative

A child representative is an attorney for the child. They decide what is best for the child after reviewing the case. They must meet the child and parents, look at the facts, and support settlement or other ways to solve disputes. A child representative cannot testify in court.

A guardian ad litem (GAL) is also an attorney for the child. They review the case, meet with the child and parents, and report their views to the court. A GAL can testify or give a written report. They may be questioned about their findings in court.

An attorney for the child provides direct legal counsel to the child. They must act with loyalty, protect confidentiality, and give competent advice, just as with an adult client. Courts may appoint an attorney in cases about custody, parentage, support, relocation, abuse, or the child’s welfare. The court can do this on its own or after a request from either party.
